What Are Smart Devices?
Before we answer this question, you need to be familiar first with the concept of Internet of Things or IoT. A simple Google search would give you lots of lengthy and technical definitions so let me save you the time and effort and give you a simple one. Basically, IoT is connecting all things to the internet and getting data from these things or devices. These IoT devices can collect information and send it or receive information and act on it. Sometimes they can do both. A smart device is the perfect example of an IoT device. If you own a smart watch or smart band, you’d already know that it gets data like your heart rate, exercise history and sleep cycle and syncs these information with the app that you view on your phone.
With the emergence of the smart home, home automation devices have been growing in popularity and use in recent years. These smart devices are electronic devices that a user can control through the internet or other wireless protocols. You can control them even when you’re not at home. All you need to do is open the app to control them or set timers/schedules. You can actually do this even when you’re out of the country. All you need is an active internet connection on your mobile phone and the smart device that you want to control. If you want to make it appear that your home is occupied even when you’re busy shopping in the streets of Tokyo or New York, you just need to launch an app and control your smart devices.

Smart Plug – a smart plug allows a user to turn on/off appliances using a mobile phone. You can control your appliance whether you’re in your home, outside your house or in another country. As mentioned above, all you need is an active internet connection for both your smart plug and your mobile phone. You can also automate actions like setting schedules as to when these appliances will power up or shut down. Please note, however, that most smart plugs today only control the flow of electricity to your appliance. This kind of smart plug is best used for appliances that can be left on like electric fans and lamps. You turn them on or off through the app or issue voice commands to your smart assistant whether it’s Google or Alexa.
Smart Bulb – a smart bulb can also be controlled using your mobile phone. You can likewise set schedules as to when it will be turned on or off.
